Is Table Mountain safe?
Table Mountain and the surrounding national park are among the most visited places in Cape Town. You should plan for three things: fast-changing weather, steep and rocky routes, and crime in and around the park. A little planning handles most of the risk.
This is an independent guide. It is not run by the park authority, the cableway company or the emergency services. It cannot promise that a route is safe on a given day. If you are unsure about a hike, the cableway is the alternative. Check the current status of routes before you go.

Hiking safety rules for Table Mountain
The park's own basic rules, in the order you need them.
Do not hike alone
The park's advice is to go in a group, with four people as the ideal. Start early, choose your route in advance and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. Walk at the pace of the slowest person.
Carry the right gear
Wear sturdy shoes and bring waterproof, warm clothing, even in summer. Take water, food, sun protection and a charged phone.
Stay on marked paths
Do not take shortcuts. If the weather or the time turns against you, turn back. If you get lost, stay together and stop in a safe, sheltered spot if the weather stops you moving on.
Do not count on phone signal
Coverage is not available everywhere on the mountain. Save the emergency numbers before you start, and do not treat any phone app as a guarantee of a signal or a rescue.

Crime and robbery advice
The park names attacks and robbery as a risk in and around the park. It advises you not to show valuables openly and not to resist if you are robbed. As of October 2026, the German Foreign Office describes crime in South Africa as very high, and mentions recent robberies of hikers along Signal Hill. It recommends going in groups with suitable equipment.
- Leave luggage behind: drop bags at your accommodation before you go sightseeing.
- Check your car: make sure it has actually locked.
- Do not resist: if you are robbed, hand things over.

Weather, fire and wildlife
Conditions change quickly on the mountain.
Cloud and fog
The park advises against walking to Maclear's Beacon in low cloud or fog, because you can lose your way. The cableway runs only in suitable weather, so be ready to walk down. Read the weather guide for closures.
Fire risk
Work on the fire break network around the peninsula began in the week of 15 September 2026 and is expected to continue until December 2026, depending on weather. The park warns of high to extreme fire risk in the coming season. Follow any ranger closures.
Wildlife and plants
Do not feed, touch or harm wild animals, which includes baboons and dassies. Do not remove plants or rocks. Make fires only at designated braai sites.
Swimming
Swimming at Diaz Beach is banned because of strong rip currents. There are no lifeguards on the Cape Point beaches, and none at Boulders. Do not assume other bays are safe to swim in.
Emergency numbers for Table Mountain and Cape Town
Save these in your phone before you start walking.
| Who | Number |
|---|---|
| Park emergency line | 086 110 6417 |
| Cape Town Emergency Services | +27 21 480 7700 |
| Police, anywhere in South Africa | 10111 |
| Ambulance and rescue services | 10177 or 112 |
No guide, app or number guarantees that you can reach help from every spot on the mountain. Plan to be able to get yourself out.
Airport transfers and getting around
Check your ride before you get in.
The German Foreign Office warns of touts at the airport who use fake ride-hailing badges and tampered card readers. Use a verified ride-hailing app or an authorised airport taxi, and avoid people who approach you inside the terminal.
Table Mountain safety: frequently asked questions
Is it safe to hike Table Mountain alone?
The park advises against it and recommends a group, with four people as the ideal. If you walk alone anyway, tell someone your route and your expected return time.
Is it safe at night?
No one can promise that. The park suggests planning activities between sunrise and sunset, and it recommends full moon walks only in groups under experienced guidance.
What should I carry on a hike?
Sturdy shoes, warm and waterproof clothing even in summer, water, food, sun protection and a charged phone. Save the emergency numbers first.
What should I do if I am robbed?
Do not resist. Hand over what is asked, then call the police on 10111 or the park emergency line on 086 110 6417.
Can I hike when the cableway is closed?
During the annual maintenance shutdown the hiking routes can still be used in principle, but do not plan to ride the cableway down. Separate path and fire closures still apply, so check for them before you go.
