Table Mountain cableway at a glance

The cableway runs from the lower station on Tafelberg Road to the upper station at about 1,067 m. The cabins have a rotating floor, so everyone gets a view on the way up. The ride takes under five minutes. Tickets cover a return or a one-way trip, and a standard ticket is valid for 7 days.

Online and ticket office prices differ, and the tariff changed on 1 July 2026. The prices below run until 30 June 2027. A standard ticket does not remove the queue for the cabin. That is what Fast Track is for.

This guide is independent. It is not run by the cableway company, so buy and check the live status through the operator's own channels.

South African residents sometimes get limited offers; in October 2026 an adult return cost R265 and a child return R135 for residents who showed their SA ID, with the ticket bought online before the day of the visit. The last ascent and the last descent are as shown. Do not plan to take the last descent if you want a relaxed hour on top, and leave extra time if the queue is long.

Weather closures and maintenance

What stops the cableway, and how to check.

Wind and cloud

Bad weather can close the cableway, and it can happen while you are already on the summit. The operator posts the daily status on its website and app. Check it in the morning and again before you leave for the station. Cloud on its own is not always a reason to close, so a cloudy view from town does not decide it.

Annual maintenance

The cableway shuts once a year for maintenance. In 2026 the closure was announced for 27 July to 9 August, with the reopening planned for 10 August, depending on the weather. Walking routes stay open in principle, but do not count on the cabin for the way back.

Fire and trail closures

Trail closures can apply separately, for example after a fire at Kloof Nek on 3 August 2026, when walkers were asked to avoid the Contour Path and the paths near the cableway. Follow ranger instructions.

Hiking guide โ†’

Free guided walk on top

The operator offers a free guided walk of 30 minutes, every hour from 09:00 to 15:00, from the Twelve Apostles Terrace below TEN67. It is a walk on the summit, not a free ride up.

Getting to the lower station

By car, by bus and by taxi.

Park and ride

The operator offers free parking in the Lower Tafelberg Road area and a free cableway shuttle to the lower station. There is no guarantee of a free space, so arrive early on busy days.

MyCiTi bus

Lines 106 and 107 run to Kloof Nek. From there you continue on the shuttle from Lower Tafelberg Road. There is no direct bus to the lower station. You need your own topped-up myconnect card, because the bus takes no cash.

Taxi and e-hailing

The operator recommends getting out at the bus stop on Lower Tafelberg Road, where the shuttle also leaves.

Hop-on hop-off bus

City Sightseeing lists a stop at the lower station.

Table Mountain cableway: frequently asked questions

How much is the Table Mountain cableway?

An adult return ticket costs R475 online and R530 at the ticket office in 2026/27. One-way tickets cost R300 online and R330 at the ticket office. Children from 4 to 17 pay R230 return online. Under 4 is free.

Is it cheaper to buy online?

Yes. The online price is lower for adults and children, for both return and one-way tickets. A standard ticket, online or at the ticket office, still means queuing for the cabin.

What does Fast Track cost?

R1,200 for a return ticket and R750 for a one-way ticket, online or at the ticket office, in 2026/27.

How long is a ticket valid?

Standard tickets are valid for 7 days. That gives you a spare day if the cableway is closed for weather on your first try.

What time does the cableway start and stop?

It depends on the season. From May to August the first ascent is at 08:30 and the last descent at 18:00. In December and January the last descent is at 21:00. See the table above.

What if the cableway closes while I am on top?

You wait until it reopens or you walk down. Bring enough water, a warm layer and the ability to hike down, which is steep and takes time.
