The best time to visit Cape Town
Cape Town has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Winter rain comes with cold fronts. In summer, high-pressure cells over the South Atlantic drive southeast winds and moisture onto the mountain. Both seasons can bring strong wind. Winter north-westerlies and summer southerlies can reach gale force.
For a first visit focused on sightseeing and the cableway, summer is the easier choice for warmth and dry days. Winter means planning for rain, but it is also the whale season. No month guarantees clear views or a running cableway, so keep your plans flexible. This guide is independent and not run by the cableway company or the weather service.

Wind and the tablecloth by season
Why the mountain is sometimes hidden.
The tablecloth
The tablecloth is the blanket of cloud that flows down over the slopes. It is linked to the southeast wind. It does not happen every day, so it gives no sure forecast of what you will see.
Weather guide →The southeaster
The strongest southeast winds come in December and February, which are also warm months. Pick a flexible day for the cableway and be ready for a closure.
Winter fronts
Cold fronts bring the winter rain. The Skeleton Gorge route is slippery in winter and dangerous after heavy rain. Choose lower-risk plans on wet days.
Whale season near Cape Town
Southern right whales arrive in the Hermanus area between June and November to mate and calve. Humpback whales pass through at the same time, and Bryde's whales can be seen all year. Hermanus has a cliff path along Walker Bay where you can watch from land.
Boat trips depend on weather and tides, and no one can promise a sighting. Hermanus is a separate trip from Cape Town, not part of a Table Mountain day.
