Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope at a glance

Cape Point is part of Table Mountain National Park. The area is a fenced section of the park with wildlife and a single entry fee. Both viewpoints, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, are covered by that one fee. You do not pay a second park fee to visit both.

The old lighthouse sits above the point. You reach it on foot or with the Flying Dutchman Funicular, which has its own fare. The place is the south-western tip of the Cape Peninsula. It is not the southernmost point of Africa, and it is not the line where two oceans meet.

Planning the day

Hours, transport and what the tickets cover.

Gate hours

The gates are open 06:00 to 18:00 from October to March and 07:00 to 17:00 from April to September. Plan to be out by closing time, not only in by then. Do not count on leaving after sunset.

Funicular hours

The funicular runs 09:00 to 17:30 from October to March and 09:00 to 17:00 from April to September. It starts later than the gates open. The funicular reopened on 1 October 2026 after maintenance and a control system upgrade. Check that it is running on your day.

Paying at the gate

Cards only. One person pays for the whole car in one payment. Bring proof if you claim the South African or SADC rate. A gate ticket bought online does not include the funicular.

By bus tour

A full-day bus tour via Simon's Town and the penguin colony to Cape Point was priced at R475 for adults and R425 for children aged 2 to 11 in January 2026. The Cape Point entry was included. Boulders entry and lunch were not. Check the current price for your date.

Forms

General day visitors no longer need an indemnity form since 10 February 2026, although a gate page can still mention one. Bring ID anyway and expect a scan.

The walk to the Cape of Good Hope

A signpost marks the walking route to the Cape of Good Hope, and a separate sign marks the Cape of Good Hope itself. Which stretch you walk depends on your time. The fee you paid at the gate covers both viewpoints.

Allow time for the lighthouse as well. You can ride the funicular one way and walk the other, which is why one-way fares exist.

Swimming and the sea

Diaz Beach is closed to swimming because of strong rip currents. There are no lifeguards on the beaches at Cape Point. Do not treat any bay here as a safe bathing spot.

The park is fenced and has wildlife. Do not feed, touch or harm any animal, including baboons. For other parts of the park see the national park guide.
